We've booked nearly all the entertainment. The latest booking is William Schlegel who will demonstrate his amazing chainsaw wook carving skills at 1:30 p.m. in Smythe Park. You can see him in action also on this YouTube video, but it's best to see him in action live.
We now have a Facebook page. Just go to your home page and do a search for 1890s Weekend. Hit the Like button at the top and get regular updates! Oh, and spread the word to your friends, vendors and anyone you know with a cool unit for the parade! The 19th annual Fabulous 1890s Weekend is set for September 24-25 on Smythe Park in Mansfield. The Weekend celebrates the fact that the world’s first night football game was played by Mansfield University on September 28, 1892. The festivities will begin on Friday, September 24 with crafts, entertainment, hot air balloons and a soccer game. Saturday kicks off with the 1890sParade at 11 a.m. followed by a day full of music, games, crafts, the popular museum tent and living history demonstrations. The Weekend builds to a climax with a soccer game, and the re-enactment of the world’s first night football game and fireworks with music by the MU “Spirit & Pride of Pennsylvania” Marching Band. “The MU Family Day also takes place Saturday,” said Dennis Miller, co-director. “It’s the perfect time for parents and alumni to come back to visit the campus and the town.” He added that the MU sprint football team will play Army, Saturday the 25th at 1 p.m. on the VanNormal field. "There's a lot to do for all age groups the whole weekend," Miller said. Much of the success of the 1890s Weekend is the close working relationship between the town and university, Miller added. “Literally dozens of community and university organizations come together to make the Weekend the unique event that it is,” he said. The Weekend has been featured in such national media outlets as USA Weekend, MTV, Fox News, USA Today and others. The Fabulous 1890s Weekend is cosponsored by Mansfield University and the Greater Area Mansfield Chamber of Commerce. Admission is a $3 button, which is good for the entire weekend.
