The Fabulous 1890’s Festival, held this year on Saturday, September 24th, is a celebration of the last and most colorful decade of the 19th century and commemorates Mansfield, Pennsylvania’s role in America’s history holding the first night football game under electric light.
Committee head David E. Cummings says, “We are excited to once again host this unique and popular event in our community and we hope you will join us in making the Fabulous 1890’s Festival a success!”
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Mansfield’s 1890’s celebration and also coincides with the week-long Mansfield Sister Cities event where residents from Mansfield’s all over the world gather in a host city to celebrate.
Anniversaries abound this year and will be honored during the parade and on exhibit in the park. Warren L. Miller Elementary school is 50 years old, Sullivan Township is 200 years old and the Mansfield Lion’s Club recently celebrated their 75th anniversary. Other 50th anniversaries this year include the Tioga County Fair, the Roseville Rinky Dinks band, and Mansfield High School’s Class of 1966, and more.
The 1890’s Festival kicks off Saturday morning at 11am with a parade packed with 19th century costumes, horses, magnificent carriages, antique tractors, classic vehicles and marching bands.
Throughout the day on Smythe Park visitors can enjoy games, contests, shopping, local food, and entertainment. The featured attraction is the History Center’s tent which this year will exhibit photos and information about the various community anniversaries. In special recognition of the Warren L. Miller school anniversary, much beloved retired principal Jack Novak will be in the tent this year to meet former students and display the albums and scrapbooks that he kept from each year that he was principal – a collection spanning from 1966 to1993.
At dusk, student athletes from Mansfield University re-create football of the 1890’s and the night game that started a national tradition.
Following the re-enactment, a spectacular fireworks display will light up September’s evening sky for a magnificent conclusion to the day.
